Heartburn unlike its name had nothing to do with the heart. It is also known by the name Pyrosis. Though some heart disease has similar symptoms, heartburn is caused due to regurgitation of gastric acids felt through a painful burning sensation in the esophagus just below the breastbone. The gastric acid is the hydrochloric acid created by the enzymes within the stomach.
